How Our Beehives Are Doing This Spring

Last year we decided that we wanted to take our role as environmental stewards up a level. We opened up two beehives deep in the long grass behind 2 Copperhead green. It is incredible how much our ecosystem depends on pollinators. Not just honey bees, there are multiple species of bees along with butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, beetles, birds (especially hummingbirds), and bats that all contribute to pollination.
Did you know that 3/4 of the world's flowering plants depend on animal pollinators? 35% of the world's food crops also depend on these pollinators, that is one in every three bites of food you eat (data from US Department of Agriculture).
The golf course is blooming. You can say that allergy season is in full force! But it is a perfect time for our bees. They are finding lots of pollen in their surrounding area. You can see the specs of orange and yellow on their wings. That is the pollen they are collecting and bringing into the hive. There is a variety of trees, shrubs, and plants surrounding the hives that flower at different times throughout the season. This allows them the constant supply of pollen.
